Day 11: A drama you looked forward to but disappointed you in the end?
Oh man there’s so many that I can’t even begin to count. Some titles off the top of my head include, You’re All Surrounded (너희들은 포위됐다), Warm and Cozy (맨도롱 또똣), Gu Family Book (구가의 서), Records of a Night Watchman (야경꾼 일지), and Marry Him If You Dare (미래의 선택). There’s probably many more, but I’ve probably tried my best to erase them from my memories. For a lot of dramas they end up being disappointments usually because of the plot. Sometimes what seemed great on paper doesn’t always translate well to the screen or just simply terrible writing ruins it.
Day 12: Have you rewatched an Asian drama more than 3 times? if yes, which one.
Hands down, it has to be Legend of the Condor Heroes 1994 (射鵰英雄傳) starring Chilam Cheung and Athena Chu. This drama was my such a big part of my childhood and Chilam was my very first celebrity crush after watching this drama. Before Captain Cool, he was Jing Gor Gor in my heart. I’d say out of all the Jin Yong novels adapted into dramas, Legend of the Condor Heroes is my favorite out of them all. I fell in love with the main characters Kwok Jing and Wong Yung, they are my very first OTP. Time and time again, I’d always like to pull out this drama to watch again and I still love it. In fact, after I finish this post, I’m gonna watch it again haha.
Anyone who’s a fan of Jin Yong’s novels and his drama/movie adaptions knows there’s been countless remakes over the years because they’re just that popular. I’ve also seen the latest remake from Mainland China, Legend of the Condor Heroes 2008 starring Hu Ge and Ariel Lin. I also enjoyed this version because it goes into greater detail and from what I read it was also more faithful to the original novel. Plus I really liked Ariel Lin and Hu Ge’s portrayal of Wong Yong and Kwok Jing, they had fantastic chemistry together.
Day 13: What are your top favorite Asian dramas?
Hong Kong: Burning Flame (烈火雄心), The Green Hope ( 新鮮人), Legend of the Condor Heroes 1994 (射鵰英雄傳), Detective Investigation Files (刑事偵緝檔案), Cold Blood Warm Heart (天地男兒)
Taiwan: Prince Turns to Frog (王子變青蛙), My Lucky Star (放羊的星星), The Magicians of Love ( 愛情魔髮師), Black and White ( 痞子英雄), Corner With Love (轉角*遇到愛)
Japan: Zettai Kareshi (絶対彼氏), Kurosagi (クロサギ), Hana Yori Dango (花より男子)
China: Romance In The Rain (情深深雨濛濛), Princess Pearl (還珠格格)
Korea: Queen In Hyun’s Man (인현왕후의 남자), Witch’s Romance (마녀의 연애), Healer (힐러), I Hear Your Voice (너의 목소리가 들려)
Day 14: Name an overrated Drama.
Boys Over Flowers! Definitely the most over-hyped drama out there. I remember being caught up in the whole craze too when it aired but really, it wasn’t good at all. The acting was pretty bad and the plot was all messy. And I could never get that “Almost paaaaaaaradise” song out of my head, it was just atrocious. But this drama did help launch the careers of Lee Min Ho and Kim Hyun Joong and from what I heard Boys Over Flowers is what lead many people to ignite their Kdrama drama addictions. I’ve only watched it once when it aired but never again. I’ll just leave it as a distant memory.
Day 15: Name an underrated Drama.
An underrated drama would be Me Too, Flower! (나도, 꽃!). I actually really enjoyed this drama even though it turned kinda makjang towards the latter half. However the performances by Yoon Shi Yoon and Lee Ji Ah was wonderful. The role of Jae Hee was originally played by Kim Jae Won but he got injured filming the first episode and later got replaced by Yoon Shi Yoon. I thought Yoon Shi Yoon made the role his own and expressed Jae Hee’s emotions beautifully.
Me Too, Flower! is a story of two damaged individuals who learn to love and reconnect to the world again. This drama really touches the heart and hits all the right buttons emotionally. It has honest characters that one can relate to and has poignant dialogue that is very moving. It’s not a perfect drama but definitely well worth watching.
Day 16: What dramas are you currently watching?
I’m currently watching Twenty Again (두번째 스무살), Moon River (明若曉溪) and She Was Pretty (그녀는 예뻤다). Twenty Again is a such a fun and heartwarming drama about 38 year old housewife who decides to go back to school and experience university life for the first time. You just want to root for No Ra and cheer for her whenever she discovers more about herself throughout the course of the drama.
Moon River is a new drama from Taiwan. The plot is a bit similar I think to Boy Over Flowers/Meteor Garden/Hana Yori Dango but it is actually a drama adaption of a popular novel. However the major difference is the female lead has some amazing kungfu skills and can totally kick butt when needed. The pretty popular boys aren’t really mean either. It’s a fun and quirky watch that I’m enjoying, it has quite a few laugh-out-loud moments.
I’m also in the middle of writing my first impressions of She Was Pretty, so be on the lookout for that later on. So far I’m really enjoying it and Park Seo Joon is so HOT!
Day 17: Which Asian drama are you anticipating?
Descendants of the Sun – Obviously because of Song Joong Ki and it’s his first project after his army service. Oh how I have missed my boy! Can’t wait to see him on the small screen again.
Reply 1988 – I’ve been a fan of the Reply series, so I look forward to seeing the next installment. I’m sure it will be full of laughs and nostalgia. Also after watching I Remember You, I want to see more Park Bo Gum!
Sassy Go Go – Another school themed drama with a focus on cheerleading and pretty much the only reason I wanna watch it is because of Ji Soo! I’ve missed you so much Bok Dongie!!
The Village – A mystery thriller starring Moon Geun Young and Yook Sung Jae. It’s something different and the story/genre is interesting.
Day 18: Which Asian drama(s) would you like to see a 2nd season of?
I Remember You because I want to see Ji An and Lee Hyun catch Lee Joon Ho, more bromance between Hyun and Min and of course more cutesy romance (and lots of skinship) between our OTP.
Surplus Princess because the end was just WTF? It was a rushed ending because the drama got cut short due to low ratings. I honestly shipped Ha Ni and Shi Kyung because their relationship was more developed and he was the reason why she wanted to become human in the first place. Although I’d probably would have shipped Ha Ni and Hyun Myung if the drama didn’t get their episodes cut and had to time develop their relationship more. So a second season would be nice to continue developing the relationships from where it was left off. Also I don’t mind seeing more of Nam Joo Hyuk and Kim Seul Ki as Big and Hye Young because they were such a cute couple.
Sweden Laundry simply because I was not satisfied with the open ending and I wanted to see Bom and Soo Chul finally end up together. You could see at the end there was hints that Bom had developed some feelings for our adorably sweet Soo Chul who always looked out for his noona. Spring couple!!
Day 19: Your favorite Asian drama actor?
Hong Kong: Chilam (Julian) Cheung, Wong Hei, Steven Ma, Bosco Wong
China: Hu Ge, Jing Bo Ran, Lin Geng Xin, Li Yi Feng
Taiwan: Ming Dao, Mark Chao, George Hu, Bolin Chen, Jimmy Lin
Korea: Song Joong Ki, Seo In Guk, Park Seo Joon, Yoon Shi Yoon, Ji Sung, Ji Chang Wook, Yoo Yeon Seok
Japan: Oguri Shun
Day 20: Your favorite Asian drama actress?
Hong Kong: Tavia Yeung, Esther Kwan
China: Vicki Zhao, Fan Bing Bing, Ruby Lin
Taiwan: Joe Chen, Ariel Lin
Japan: Inoue Mao, Aibu Saki
