Mid-Point Review: Moon River

It has been a while since I’ve watched a Taiwanese drama and I decided to watch Moon River because I was bored. I’m really surprised by how much I like it and I’ll admit it that I’m actually more addicted to it. It’s such a quirky and funny drama, there’s so many LOL moments that I really couldn’t stop laughing/giggling and have to hold it in especially when I’m watching late at night.

So what’s the story about? When I first read the synopsis on Viki, I thought “Isn’t this just another Boys Over Flowers/Hana Yori Dango/Meteor Garden remake?” Apparently not because this is a drama adaption of a famous novel of the same name. Coincidentally enough the name of the lead female character is also the same name as author of the novel, Ming Xiao Xi.

What happens when you throw a fish into a shark tank? Ming Xiao Xi (Pets Tseng) is admitted to the elite Kuan Yu University because of her academic achievements and many Kung Fu championship titles. But her humble family background, unsophisticated demeanor and awkward appearance put her at direct odds with the polished, privileged students who attend the university. When Xiao Xi tries to help someone in need from her hometown, she becomes embroiled in the lives of Mu Liu Bing (Sam Lin), Feng Jian Che (Evan Ma) and Dong Hao Nan (Xu Kai Cheng), the big shots on campus. When Xiao Xi and Liu Bing develop feelings for each other, can Xiao Xi’s bumbling but indomitable personality help Liu Bing deal with the pains of his past? (Credit: Viki)

I just finished watching up episode 14 which is what has been currently aired so far. I realized it’s nothing like BOF at all but alas the story isn’t anything new either if that’s what you were expecting. The drama is strangely addicting and I’ve been trying to pinpoint exactly why for a while now. I believe what really sells it for me is the quirky characters like Ming Xiao Xi who is a countryside girl with amazing martial arts skills and doesn’t really care what other people think about her. I mean look at her fashion choices, she’s pretty confident rocking those rainbow toe socks with sandals.

I adore our OTP too played by Pets Tseng and Sam Lin. I think they have wonderful chemistry together and they always make the most comical facial expressions. I love it when Xiao Xi calls Liu Bing “Skating Grandma” I find it hilarious and I can’t help but chuckle every time I hear it. I’ll be honest though I wasn’t that attracted to Sam Lin in the beginning and I was into Evan Ma more but I grew to really adore Sam. I find his acting to be pretty natural (but still raw at times) and he has beautiful eyes. From what I read, Sam believes it’s his best feature and rightly so. Pets is really cute too and I think she’s a great singer. I really love her song for the drama “Season of Rain.”

Overall, this drama is really fun and easy watch. It can be over the top and quite silly but yet it doesn’t make you feel put off by it either. I look forward to the new episodes as they are released. We’re already halfway through the drama, so I’m anticipating what’s in store for our characters next.
